With the kids going back to school in September, parents will be looking for something for themselves. We will be starting new yoga and pilates classes and also a running club for beginners and improvers.

Keep your eyes peeled on the website as we will be announcing the dates very soon

Have you reached the Boredom Point?

Posted under Fitness,General by andypinker on Thursday 20 August 2009

Many people join gyms or buy gym equipment because they are aware (often through the media pressure) of the need to exercise and keep the body moving to stave off illness and retain good health. For the first few weeks or months, it’s a new ‘thing’ so the motivation is there and because they are exercising they often lose weight and everything is great. However unless they really enjoy the activity, sooner or later there will come a point when the motivation just goes. For some this might be a gradual process where class attendance or gym visits become less frequent and something else gets given priority. For others the boredom point comes quickly because they have embarked upon their fitness journey knowing deep down that they aren’t going to enjoy it, but start because they know they should do something. For some, even joining a gym but never using it, makes them feel better because they have made some effort to keep fit. Only a small percentage of the population are super motivated individuals who will stick with a gym routine forever, exercising regulary 3 times a week. For most the idea of going to a gym 3 times a week for the rest of their lives is difficult to comprehend.

The truth is that the human body is designed to move all of our lives, and as soon as we stop moving this sends powerful triggers to the brain that something is wrong. Prolonged periods of inactivity leads to the body storing fat, muscle weakness, lack of energy, fatigue and eventually illness as the body starts to slowly shut down. Modern sedentary lifestyles support this situation and therefore in order to live longer and healthier lives, we must do something to change the signals we are sending our brains. Physical activity is the only way to trigger the brain into signalling the body to come to life and re-energise the body. Of course there are no guarantees to perfect health and longevity, there are always examples of those who have smoked and drunk all their 90 odd years of life! Good genes are a factor in good health and longevity, but modern science is proving that good genes are a smaller factor than first thought and a person can have a much greater impact on his/her health and longevity through their own lifestyle choices. Lifestyle choices obviously include exercise, but also diet is equally important and a person’s psychological approach to life weighs heavily in the importance stakes too.

It is important, before we begin any physical activity that mentally we acknowledge the priority we should place on health.  The following saying is very approriate; lose your money, you lose nothing, lose your reputation, you lose something, lose your health, you lose everything. We should all make time in our lives, everyday to do at least 30 minutes of exercise, even if that is a brisk walk. Once we have prioritised health, it is then crucial to find an exercise regime that will be fun and challenging for life. Class activities are good, because then there is the social interaction with others and friendships can be made who will motivate each other. Another important factor is the mental and physical stimulation and challenge. Often the activities which keep most students longest are those where there is constant variation and a constantly changing goal which is subjective to the individual. Many people want to feel that they can actually do the activity i.e it’s not elitest. But also once engaged and competent, they need to feel challenged and progressing towards a goal. Lots of smaller goals along the journey to a final goal can often work very well. An open minded approach is also important. Have a go at something new without forming any pre-suppositions. A closed minded approach will stop you from finding that perfect exercise class.

Happy exercising

Running, Pilates, Yoga and Choi

Dear All,

Just a quick email to let you know some of our latest news.

Run for your Life

Due to the success of the Running Club which has been running on Wednesday evenings, we have been asked by many of the participants if we will be doing another, and the good news is that we will. The current group is a real mixed group ranging from those that have never run more than a few yards since school, to some who are trying to get back into running after a time off. It is turning into a nice social group and if the next 6 week course is as much success, then we might consider running the class on additional days. The current course has 3 weeks left to run and we’d like to start the next one straight after. We expect it to be busy, so if you are interested then please let us know as soon as possible. The cost for the next 6 week course will be around the same excellent price of £20

Pilates

Since we opened the centre last year we have had numerous requests for Pilates classes but up until now we have not quite had the facility to offer this. However we are now in a better position to start these classes and we are currently in discussion with some Pilates teachers. We are taking names for all those that are interested, so do let us know if you would like to be added to this list and which days would suit you most.

Yoga

Our yoga classes started with a rush of new students a few months ago and many of these classes are still going strong with all students noticing benefits in flexibility and strength and balance. Traditionally the summer months of July and August tend to get quieter for yoga schools as parents take kids away for the school holidays. Many yoga centre’s finish their terms for these periods, but luckily we have been able to keep our most popular classes running. To coincide with the kids going back to school in September and parents having more time for themselves, we are planning to kick start some new courses in Scaravelli, Ashtanga and Freestyle yoga. We are taking names for these new courses, so let us know if you would like to be added to this list and the days which would suit you best. For more details of the types of yoga, please see our website at the link below.

Choi for Life

Our main health and fitness programme continues to grow steadily. Many students who started as beginners 6 months ago, are noticing huge benefits in their health. Our daytime classes are now as busy as our evening classes, and we have had many women joining. Choi for Life is quite unique and unlike most other health and fitness programmes in that it can be tailored to the individual. Our growing instructor base enables us to offer students one-to-one assistance whenever required, which is something that most single instructor led classes can’t offer. As a result we help a range of people get fitter and healthier, and we have considerable experience working with people with various health challenges; Joint problems, back aches, trapped nerves, fused joints, arthritis, osteoporosis, Parkinson’s, those recovering from strokes are just some of the success stories we have had. We have yet to encounter someone that Choi for Life cannot help. If you know anyone who you think might benefit from a class, then let us know.

Circuit

The circuit is still going strong and our regular members who stick to the recommended 30 minutes, 3 times a week are seeing the weight just drop off.

If you haven’t plucked up the courage to pop down yet, or come back and try something different, do it now and you’ll never look back. If now isn’t quite right for you then that’s also fine as we will be here if you change your mind

Why should I try yoga?

Posted under Fitness by andypinker on Tuesday 28 July 2009

Most people’s idea of a yoga class is a room full of women lying on the floor relaxing, doing nice slow movements with thier body. Whilst this is true of some types of yoga, not all classes are like this and there are styles to suit most people’s neeeds. Whilst some forms of Yoga can offer more of a spiritual journey, and others help bring awareness to each muscle in the body in a gentle, rejuvenating manner. Yoga can also provide an invigorating, very challenging workout which not only improves flexbility but also increases stamina, improves muscle strength, balance, co-ordination, helps with weightloss, strengthens abnominal and core muscles. It can also improve cardiovasular conditioning. A common theme with all forms of yoga is the importance of breathing throughout postures.

More people are becoming aware of the need to keep fit but thier efforts and motivations are often dashed when they try gyms and quickly lose interest. This is why it is as important to find a type of physical activity that will be fun and stimulating, to avoid boredom. Ensuring constant health and wellbeing should be a fun, stimulating process.

Yoga provides the student with a constantly stimulating and varied workout which is enjoyable and fun.

As we age the importance of stretching becomes greater and regular stretching should be practised at least three times a week, and if possible everyday. Regular stretching ensures that we continue to enjoy a good range of mobility throughout our lives and our functional fitness (the body’s ability to carry out everyday tasks) remains intact.
